What happens in Individual Counselling Sessions?

In individual counselling sessions, you can expect a supportive, safe space where you and your therapist work collaboratively to explore what is happening in your daily life, relationships, emotions, and overall well being. Sessions often begin by understanding what brought you in, whether that includes stress, anxiety, relationship challenges, life transitions, identity exploration, emotional overwhelm, or feeling stuck.

Your therapist may ask questions to better understand your experiences, patterns, strengths, and goals. From there, individual therapy becomes more focused and goal oriented, helping you build self discovery, improve distress tolerance, and create meaningful change at a pace that feels manageable.

At our SW Calgary counselling office in Bridlewood, counselling works by giving you time to slow down, reflect, and better understand what you need. Sessions may include emotional processing, practical coping tools, communication strategies, and support for navigating difficult situations. Depending on your needs, your therapist may also draw from evidence based approaches such as CBT, ACT, and Psychodynamic Therapy, which are mentioned on the page.

We have a diverse team that includes psychologists, counsellors, coaches, and registered provisional psychologist support. During the early part of therapy, we can also discuss practical details such as insurance coverage, counselling costs, session frequency, and what to expect moving forward.

​Individual counselling is not only for people in crisis. Many adults and young people use counselling to better understand themselves, strengthen relationships, improve well being, and feel more supported through the challenges of everyday life.

What type of therapy is used for anxiety?

Anxiety is treated using a range of evidence-based approaches tailored to individual mental health concerns.  The therapy process is best received from a registered psychologist and in a collaborative approach.  To make the experience meaningful we want you to feel safe and be able to share your unique experiences so we can tailor a plan that is right for you. 

Common therapies include commitment therapy, internal family systems, and narrative therapy, all of which support emotional insight and long-term change.  This will build resilience and help you feel happier about your mental health progress. 

Treatment is typically provided by a registered psychologist or registered provisional psychologist who follows evidence based practices and stays current through ongoing education. These approaches are especially helpful during life transitions or when anxiety affects relationships, identity, or overall wellbeing.

​For individual therapy we recommend in person counselling sessions for best results and we often see lasting change, even from the first session in people's lives when in this environment. 

What is the best treatment for anxiety?

The best treatment for anxiety depends on the person, their symptoms, mental health and the context of their life.  In the process we work on coping skills, emotional regulation, building healthy relationships and self esteem to name a few.  Outcomes differ based on individual needs and circumstances, but as registered psychologists we know the benefit of Calgary counselling and making that first step towards a healthier life.  We work to make sure you feel like our therapy in Calgary is a good fit for you and that you can get the most out of it.
